Thursday

This afternoon, Tim Caldwell, general manager of the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce provided Seattle2PT with a comparison chart for the options being weighed in by the WSDOT.

In correspondence via email, Tim went on to say “The Port Ludlow-Kingston POF option answers two significant objectives: with fewer conveyance transfers, it will be less cumbersome for the traveler to get across Hood Canal, and any savings in the construction/removal of the temporary infrastructure could be re-appropriated to fund a Port Townsend-Edmonds auto ferry.”

Due to the recent decision by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to forego constructing a temporary passenger-only ferry (POF) terminal at Port Gamble as part of its bridge closure mitigation plan, two options are now under review to mitigate the May-June, 2009 bridge closure.

Since February 2008, Washington State Ferries has been reviewing the possibility of providing a car ferry from Port Townsend to Edmonds. It has not been determined whether it will occur but WSDOT is looking into the feasibility both in terms of vessel availability and funding.

Please note the following corrections to the attachment included with your May 29th posting:

POF DOCK: Port Ludlow-Kingston. Lease costs and some facility improvements would be required in order for WSDOT to operate a water shuttle route at those locations. The budget for the two sites has not been completed.

PARKING: Port Ludlow will have 175 onsite parking stalls and 360 remote stalls (not 600 within walking distance). Kingston has 230 on site parking stalls and 360 remote stalls (not 600 within walking distance). The South Point to Lofall option has a total of 3,000 stalls at remote parking sites (not 2,750).

For an equivalent number of parking stalls to be available, additional parking would have to be constructed at Port Ludlow. The cost for this work is estimated at approximately $600,000-$1 million.

CONVEYANCE TRANSFERS: Port Ludlow-Kingston would require taking a shuttle bus service to remote parking once the onsite parking lots (175 at Port Ludlow and 230 at Kingston) are full.

More details about these options and other important information about the Hood Canal bridge project are available online at www.hoodcanalbridge.com.

Also, we welcome public feedback on these options by completing a brief, online survey at www.hoodcanalbridge.com.
